Illustration grads featured in American online arts and literature journal, Nat Brut

Seneca faculty, Martha Newbigging, currently Nat Brut’s comics editor, promoted the work of Illustration grads (2020), Pardis Pahlavanlu and Sunny Singh. Issue 16 features the full-length mini-comics that were created in the Illustration program’s specialization course on comics creation led by Newbigging. The course gives illustration students the opportunity to write and draw an original 8-page comic book. Students must pitch their story concept, create all the artwork, and produce an edition of 10 printed and bound comic books. “The comics by Sunny and Pardis fit the mandate of Nat Brut to publish exploratory creative work representative of different identities”, says Newbigging. “These two illustrators really dug into the creative use of the comics form to question and portray troubling aspects of their own lived experience.” Formerly a biannual magazine, Nat Brut now releases one online issue a year and is the recipient of a 2020 Whiting Literary Magazine Prize. Pardis and Sunny’s comics may be viewed online at https://www.natbrut.com/issue-sixteen.
