Art Toronto

This work titled Miss America by Kent Monkman was one of the many works to take over the Toronto Convention Centre this weekend at the annual Art Fair titled Art Toronto.  Galleries from Toronto and around the world took over the North Building to put on a very fine show. Sales seemed to be brisk as the exhibit on Friday was very different from that on Sunday.  As work was sold, new work was put up!  Much of the work seemed very accessible with the recent return to illustrative visualizing in paint and manipulated photos.  While most of the work was by established artists, there was some effort to show emerging artists with RBC’s annual painting competition on display.

The Focus on Asia was a large curated exhibition of Asian Artists who were chosen or worked within a theme of Beyond Geography, commenting on the duality that exists when so much of the world is not exclusively connected to one culture.  Works on paper, video and porcelain plates created an intriguing cross-section.

Throughout the entire show, artists were pushing the limits on how and what to display with a large range of materials, surfaces and combinations thereof.  The best year yet for Art Toronto!
