Freelance illustrator and comic book artist Kalman Andrasofszky is an instructor for Seneca’s Illustration diploma program. He teaches classes about digital tools and digital painting, life drawing, and visual development. As a busy freelance artist, Kalman works on digital illustrations for comics and concept art.
One of the many projects Kalman is working on includes creating variant covers for a horror crossover comic series titled Hack / Slash Body Bags published by Image Comics. He illustrated Hack / Slash Body Bags issue #2, which will be released in October 2024, and will be doing an upcoming variant cover for issue #4.
“Body Bags was a creator-owned comic. I never imagined I would get to work on those characters professionally, but things changed and I got hired to do this cover and it was a real thrill because it’s a book I read and enjoyed a lot back in the day.”
Kalman has been a longtime member of RAID (Royal Academy of Illustration & Design), a collective studio where he works with 20+ artists in a shared space. Another project he is working on is a short comic book story for an anthology graphic novel published by RAID studio.
“It’s a way for all of us to have an opportunity and a reason to do things for ourselves because it’s always a cascading parade of deadlines.“
To support his professional work, Kalman makes time for quick warm up drawings to restore a bit of joy and stay creative. He uses traditional materials such as markers and Bristol paper to sketch out ideas. He emphasizes that the spontaneous nature of these drawings lets him take a break from larger digital projects. The drawings also remind him that it’s possible to take something from start to completion in a short amount of time.
From freelancing to teaching, and even running a vintage clothing business, Kalman attributes his ability to maintain structure by keeping busy in different areas. Together with his wife, Annemarie, Kalman operates EVOL Vintage where they source and sell 1950s to 1990s clothing. By exploring various creative avenues, Kalman has been able to meet new people, express his passions, and achieve a healthy work life balance.
